Avanti West Coast prepares for next phase of £2m Macclesfield station redevelopment

Avanti West Coast set to begin last phase of works to redevelop Macclesfield station.

  • Last phase of redevelopment works at Macclesfield station set to begin
  • Customers reminded of important changes to station facilities
  • Avanti West Coast investment designed to improve customer experience and create welcoming gateway to town

Avanti West Coast is investing £2m to redevelop Macclesfield station with the last phase of works set to begin this week.

Focused on improvements to the main station building, the works are designed to enhance the customer experience and create a welcoming gateway for those travelling by rail.

The project will see the creation of a modern, spacious station entrance with an upgraded ticket office, new waiting room, and toilets, including an accessible toilet. A new retail unit will also be available.

All these facilities will be located within the same footprint as the existing station building on platform 1. The work, which is due to be completed in Spring 2026 follows the installation of new bike storage, which came into use last month.

In addition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology will be introduced at the station car park to make end-to-end journeys more seamless. It will save time entering and exiting, where car park barriers are currently in place, and remove the hassle of having to pay for parking after travelling by train.

More payment options will also be available for parking, including card, Google Wallet, Apple Pay and cash, which can be done before or after a train journey.

While the work takes place, the main station building will be closed with reduced facilities. Alternative ticket retailing will be available, and temporary toilets will be in place on platform 1. The station will also be cashless and only accept card payments.

Customers travelling to or from Macclesfield during this time are advised to buy their tickets online, where possible.

Dean Duthie, Engineering and Infrastructure Director at Avanti West Coast, said: “This investment is part of our commitment to offer the best possible experience to our customers. The redevelopment will make the station a more welcoming environment and an improved gateway to Macclesfield – a town we’re proud to serve.

“We recognise the work taking place will mean reduced facilities for customers using the station and would like to thank them for their patience and understanding. As always, our station team will be on hand to help with any queries.”

About Avanti West Coast

Avanti West Coast, operator of intercity rail services on the West Coast Main Line, is a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia, delivering a cleaner, greener railway that drives the West Coast forward. Avanti West Coast serves key UK cities, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow as well as North Wales.

We’re on a mission to be the transport of choice – connecting customers and communities along the West Coast. Our award-winning Pendolino refurbishment programme transformed the UK’s hardest working fleet with all 56 of the iconic trains providing best-in-class comfort.

Our Evero fleet, which offers more seats, improved comfort, and a substantial cut to carbon emissions, was introduced in June 2024 and is the result of a £350m investment in sustainable travel. Built by Hitachi, the 23-strong fleet, consisting of 10 seven-carriage electric trains and 13 five-carriage bi-modes, serves routes from London to the Midlands, Chester, North Wales and the North West.

We want to make a positive difference to the people and places we serve – helping to drive economic growth, green travel, and break down barriers. Our efforts to contribute to society and enable people to benefit from the opportunities rail offers through purpose-led initiatives including Feel Good Field Trips and award-winning female driver recruitment campaign has seen us create over £1billion in social value impact.

We’re tackling climate change wherever we can, from reducing energy and water use to training drivers in eco-driving techniques and sourcing food and drink from local suppliers. Our goal is to be net zero carbon by 2031. We’re on track.
