Avanti West Coast issues travel advice ahead of the Christmas getaway

Avanti West Coast removes all Peak time restrictions over the festive season and encourages customers to book in advance.

  • Customers urged to check train times, book ahead and make a reservation
  • West Coast operator removes all Peak Time restrictions over the festive season
  • All ticket types, including Superfare and Advance tickets, now on sale

Avanti West Coast is encouraging customers to book ahead, make a reservation and where possible, travel at quieter times over the festive period.

With services expected to be at their busiest on Saturday 23 December and Wednesday 27 December, Avanti West Coast has also announced that it will again be removing its Peak restrictions.

For two weeks, from 22 December 2023 until 7 January 2024, the West Coast Main Line operator will be withdrawing Peak fares to give customers greater flexibility when making their travel plans, as they look forward to spending time with friends and family over the festive period.

All ticket types, including the cheaper Advance tickets and the new Superfare, for travel dates until the New Year are on sale. Customers are strongly advised to book in advance as well as make a seat reservation for their journey.

Services will finish earlier on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and start later on 27 December and New Year’s Day. Engineering work will also see a much-reduced timetable on 1 January 2024. There are no services on Christmas and Boxing Day.

An Avanti West Coast spokesperson said: “Our services are expected to be really busy in the run up to Christmas and for the return to work in the New Year.  So we’re encouraging customers to book ahead, make a reservation and arrive at their station in good time.”

“We’ve removed all Peak time restrictions to make it cheaper too and those with flexible travel plans can also consider our Superfare ticket with prices from as low as £9 from London to Birmingham.”

About Avanti West Coast

Avanti West Coast, operator of intercity rail services on the West Coast Main Line, is a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia, delivering a cleaner, greener railway that drives the West Coast forward.

We’re on a mission to revolutionise train travel. Our refurbed Pendolinos are returning to the rails, with a £117m investment that’s delivering best in class comfort. Rebuilt using sustainable materials wherever possible, including tables made from recycled plastic bottles, our upgraded fleet offers 25,000 brand new seats, free Wi-Fi, onboard recycling and much more.

New Hitachi trains are set to replace our Voyager trains from 2024, leading to a 61% cut in carbon emissions. Quieter and roomier, with more reliable Wi-Fi, wireless charging for electrical devices and a real-time customer information system, the new 23-strong fleet is the result of a £350m investment in sustainable travel.

We’re tackling climate change wherever we can, from reducing energy and water use to training drivers in eco-driving techniques and sourcing food and drink from local suppliers. Our goal is to be net zero carbon by 2031. We’re on track.
